PoweringUP is an employment program available to individuals living in the Red Deer area who are currently unemployed and would like to get into a trade (electrical, plumbing, welding or carpentry). The program is a 15-week commitment. The first week we go over job search skills, then the participants get 10 weeks of in class training with Red Deer Polytechnic where they will brush up on their math, learn to read blueprints, and get about a week in each of the shops. You get a few days in the electrical shop, then a few days in the pipes shops, then a few days in welding and a few in carpentry. The participants also do some safety ticket training. Then we ask each participant which trade interests them and we connect them with a local employer, in the trade of their choice, for 4 weeks of on the job training. After that we assist with job placement in that trade and do a 90 day follow up to ensure they make it past the 3 month probation period with the company.

To be eligible you must have a driver's license/vehicle, must be over 18 and out of high school for at least one year, live in the Red Deer Area, and a Canadian Citizen or PR. You also need to be unemployed, due to no fault of your own and interested in a career in the trades.
