The 1838 Great Britain four pence coin, also known as a groat, was issued during the early reign of Queen Victoria. The obverse features a youthful portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, with the legend “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA.” The reverse shows Britannia seated with a trident and shield, with the denomination “FOUR PENCE” and the date “1838” below. Struck in sterling silver (92.5%), the coin measures 16 mm in diameter. It was part of the Maundy and circulating coinage used for small transactions. In XF (Extremely Fine) condition, the coin retains strong details with only slight wear on high points, sharp legends, and much of its original luster. This coin represents a classic example of early Victorian-era British currency.
