The Butchart Gardens is looking for an individual to fill the following seasonal position:

DEPARTMENT: Arts and Entertainment
POSITION: Summer Lighting and Scenic Technician

The Arts & Entertainment Department at The Butchart Gardens creates and operates the summer lighting display, the evening concerts, fireworks, and the annual Christmas display. The department also oversees all artwork and graphics, as well as photography for the company. The Summer Lighting and Scenic Technician is a temporary role assisting with installing, maintaining, and operating both the summer lighting display and preparation for our Christmas display. Much of the work involves lighting and electricity, and although experience in this field isn’t required as we will supply training to the right person, comfort working with electricity is essential.

The successful candidate will be required to:
• Assist with summer lighting duties
• Perform maintenance rounds during operating hours to ensure all indoor and outdoor lighting is functional and up to standard
• Assist with troubleshooting any issues with indoor and outdoor lighting displays
• Assist with the Entertainment crew on tent install and lighting hang
• Assist with Christmas display preparation
• Other duties as required

The successful candidate will possess some the following qualifications:
• A genuine positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others in a team-based setting
• A strong sense of initiative and an ability to work independently
• Willingness to work with electrical equipment
• An ability to work with hand and small power tools
• Background in scenic carpentry, displays, basic welding and/or stage technical skills an asset
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to apply creative judgement and deploy strong problem-solving abilities
• Flexibility in scheduling of hours. Evening and weekend work is required depending on the season
• Valid BC Driver’s License

This is a seasonal position, offering 40 hours of work per week from May until approximately Labour Day. Work through mid-September is also possible for those interested. Weekend and evening work will be required, along with occasional overtime. All necessary training will be provided after employment is confirmed. Some work will take place at heights, and candidates must be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather. The job activities are repetitive in nature and require lifting strength. A considerable amount of walking is also involved to move around the property. Please note that this position is contingent upon successful completion of a physical assessment.

Wage starting at $23.72. Remuneration will be commensurate with this level of responsibility and the qualifications of the successful candidate.
