Supervisor - Metal Processing Shop
Description
Join a well-established metal processing shop. We take pride in delivering precision, high-quality components in energy and structural construction. We are seeking a hands-on leader who leads by example, commands respect on the shop floor and maintain uncompromising standards for safety and craftsmanship.
The Working Shop Supervisor splits their time between direct production work (60%) and floor management (40%). You will actively work alongside your crew, set up and oversee proper, efficient operation of machinery (beam line, plate table, metal bandsaw and iron worker) while managing daily production schedules, material workflows, and quality assurance. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Knowledge & Skills Requirements ~
ProNest & CNC Proficiency: Must be experienced in nesting and optimize material utilization, reduce scrap, and programming multi-axis CNC plasma machine.
Consumable Optimization: Must have a proven track record of managing and maximizing the lifespan of consumables (e.g., nozzles, electrodes, saw blades) and optimizing material yields.
Common Skeletons / Nest Spacing: To prevent torch diving and save materials, your supervisor must utilize ProNest to adjust minimum part separation distances, maintain the optimal lead-in/lead-out parameters, and employ common-line cutting.
Piercing Strategy Enforcement: To minimize consumable waste and the supervisor should prioritize edge-starts and properly configured feed rates over piercing through the center of thick plates, which wears out tips prematurely.
Remnant Tracking: The supervisor must utilize ProNest’s plate inventory and remnant management features. This guarantees that partial sheets are cataloged and automatically used for smaller parts, dramatically reducing scrap.
Daily Machine Health Checks: Require the supervisor to mandate morning and end-of-shift audits to inspect torch alignment, gas pressure settings, and plasma table conditions, ensuring machine conditions do not artificially ruin consumables and scheduled calibration of equipment.
Core Leadership & Operational Responsibilities ~
Daily Workflow Management: Assign daily tasks to a team of 2-5 operators to meet tight production timelines.
Shop Leadership: Ability to manage and successfully drive daily workflow, coordinate staff, and train junior team members ensuring proper technique and growth.
Hands-On Capability: Must be a working supervisor willing to jump on the tools when necessary to meet deadlines. Set up, operate, and troubleshoot metal processing machinery.
Quality Assurance (QA): Perform final dimensional inspections against shop drawings, accurate labelling and sorting of parts and paperwork.
Safety Stewardship: Enforce strict shop safety protocols, ensure 100% PPE compliance, and conduct weekly safety toolbox talks.
Inventory Control: Monitor shop consumables, report material stock levels, and coordinate staging with the shipping/receiving team.
Position Requirements ~
Trade Certification: Red Seal or Alberta Journeyman ticket in Metal Fabrication, Welding, Machinist or a closely related trade.
Leadership Track Record: Minimum 2–3 years of experience as a Lead Hand, Shop Foreman, or Supervisor in an industrial metal manufacturing setting.
Equipment Safety Tickets: Valid Forklift and Overhead Crane certification is strongly preferred.
