Waste Management Driver
Position Summary
The Waste Management Driver is responsible for safely operating waste collection vehicles to collect, transport, and unload garbage, recycling, organics, and other approved materials. This role follows assigned routes, performs vehicle inspections, operates collection equipment, communicates with dispatch and crew members, and ensures all work is completed in accordance with traffic laws, safety procedures, and environmental requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Safely operate waste collection vehicles on assigned residential, commercial, industrial, or municipal routes.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, check fluid levels, lights, brakes, tires, safety equipment, and report defects or maintenance concerns.
• Operate vehicle-mounted equipment such as hydraulic arms, lifts, compactors, dump mechanisms, and related controls.
• Collect and transport garbage, recycling, organics, yard waste, bulky items, or other approved materials to designated disposal yard bin.
• Follow route sheets, GPS instructions, dispatch updates, schedules, and customer service requirements.
• Ensure loads are secure and transported in compliance with traffic laws, weight limits, company policy, and environmental regulations.
• Assist with loading bins, carts, bags, and bulky materials when required, using safe lifting and traffic-control practices.
• Maintain accurate daily records, including mileage, fuel use, route completion, # of full bins collected, incidents, missed pickups, contamination issues, and vehicle inspection reports.
• Communicate professionally with supervisors, dispatch, customers, facility staff, and crew members.
• Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle cab, exterior, tools, and assigned equipment.
• Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all occupational health and safety procedures.
Qualifications and Skills
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license
• Clean driver’s abstract and strong knowledge of safe driving practices, traffic laws, and defensive driving are required.
• Previous experience driving 1 Ton Trucks.
• Ability to complete vehicle inspection reports, route documentation, disposal records, and incident reports accurately.
• Ability to operate hydraulic or mechanical collection equipment safely and follow lockout, traffic-control, and hazard-awareness procedures.
• Strong reliability, punctuality, customer service, teamwork, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a crew in a fast-paced outdoor environment.
Physical and Working Conditions
• Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving and safely enter and exit the vehicle frequently throughout the shift.
• Must be able to lift, push, pull, bend, walk, and stand when assisting with the collection of bins.
• Work is performed outdoors and on roadways in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and wind.
• May work near moving traffic, pedestrians, heavy equipment, compactors, sharp objects, odours, dust, and biological or chemical hazards.
• Must be comfortable wearing personal protective equipment and following safe work practices at all times.
• Early morning, evening, weekend, overtime, or holiday shifts may be required depending on route schedules and operational needs.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience, license class, driver’s abstract, and the requirements of the position. Training opportunities and safety equipment may be provided.
