This lovely 1911 landscape print is truly a distinctive piece of art.
Showcased in its original 13½” x 7½” wood frame behind glass. Uniquely, the actual hand-coloured lithograph is placed ‘on top’ of the complementary brown paper, creating a ‘mat-like’ design.
The 115 year old frame, glass, nails, original eye-hooks and wire are all in excellent condition. The back dust-cover was removed but was securely sealed. The beveled style frame has subtle gild side details which draw one’s eyes towards the artwork.
The untitled landscape watercolour creates a tranquil setting with a full creek winding beside a cluster of tall birch trees. Burgy captures the interplay of natural light on the water and the papery bark. A rustic, thatched roof cottage and ‘limb fence’ appear to the left of the stream.

Frederick S. Burgy was best known for creating peaceful, scenic paintings of nature, often focusing on water, foliage and rural houses. Burgy used oil on canvas, pastels, and like this scene – watercolours. He was most artistically active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1902 Burgy married Ida Amalia W. Branth Burgy (b. Aug. 30, 1871) who was an American violinist, violin teacher, and cyclist, based in New York City. They had a daughter, Florence.
Burgy’s art pieces are listed in the Smithsonian Art Museum and numerous private collections.
