Description:
For sale is a beautiful, highly collectible 19th-century French mercury wheel (banjo) barometer and thermometer weather station, crafted by the renowned makers J. Molteni Paris.
This impressive piece features a heavily carved solid oak case decorated with a classic "Chasse" (Hunting/Black Forest) motif of leaves and berries. The wood body is in exceptional antique condition with no damage, splits, or repairs, retaining its gorgeous original 150-year-old patina.

Provenance & Historical Significance:
This piece features spectacular historical documentation handwritten in pencil inside the rear compartment panel. It is firmly dated 1873 and contains two rare, invaluable calibration notes written in cursive by the original French craftsman:
"Le ludion est plus lourd que le contrepoids" (The float is heavier than the counterweight) – a specific mechanical balancing instruction.
"Le cadran fait presque un tour" (The dial makes almost a full turn) – a blueprint guide for calibrating the hand's mechanical sweep.
Condition & Functionality:
Casing & Glass: Very good antique condition. No damage to the oak body. The front dial glass and the thermometer glass are completely intact and unbroken.
Thermometer: Fully functional and responds accurately to temperature changes.
Barometer: Currently non-functioning because it is missing its mercury. Crucially, the long glass mercury tube inside the back compartment is 100% intact and unbroken, and the original pulley and string system is present. Because it is completely drained of mercury, the piece is entirely safe and non-toxic to handle, ship, or transport.
This is a rare opportunity to own a documented piece of 19th-century Paris craftsmanship. It serves as a stunning decorative heirloom as-is, or a straightforward restoration project for a collector to refill the mercury using the craftsman's own internal instructions.
