Vintage 1989 Squier Stratocaster MIK – Solid Alder, Pro Setup & Upgrades
Description:
Up for sale is a unique, transitional-era 1989 Squier Standard Stratocaster, Made in Korea (Serial: E964466).
This guitar was rescued as a project ("basket case") and has been meticulously overhauled into a high-performance player's instrument. It has plenty of honest cosmetic character, chips, and mojo from being around the block for nearly 40 years, but it plays and sounds like an absolute dream with beautiful acoustic sustain.
The Body & Construction:
• Solid Wood: This is the highly desirable full-thickness (1.75") solid Alder body variant built at the Young Chang factory, verified by checking the raw wood grain in the neck pocket. It is NOT a plywood/laminate body.
• Neck Pocket Correction: The neck pocket has been filled and stabilized using automotive Bondo. Korean factories in 1989 often cut these pockets slightly off. This repair corrects those sloppy factory tolerances to create a rock-solid, zero-tolerance custom fit. It completely eliminates neck shift and maximizes string resonance.
Premium Specs & Parts (Read Carefully):
• Neck: Original one-piece Maple neck with a 12-inch radius and comfortably rolled fretboard edges.
• Tuners: Original Squier Vintage Slotted tuners (great tuning stability).
• Nut: Upgraded custom-cut Bone nut.
• Pickups & Electronics: Standard Squier pickups and electronics. The cavity has been fully shielded with copper tape for ultra-quiet operation.
• Bridge: Standard Squier Tremolo system.
• Disclaimer: Because this guitar was a rescue project, I want to be 100% honest: while the body, neck, and tuners are original 1989 MIK parts, the electronics and bridge may be original, or they may have been sourced from a later Chinese Squier SE model. I cannot confirm either way. They function perfectly and sound excellent.
Pro Setup & Playability Specs:
• Fretwork: Frets have been completely leveled, crowned, and professionally dressed.
• Neck Relief: Set perfectly to .008" at the 7th fret. A precise 0.5-degree neck shim has been installed to optimize the neck angle.
• Action Height: Fast, low, and completely buzz-free action sitting at .070" on the Low E and .060" on the High E at the 17th fret. Bridge radius has been set to match the 12 Inch neck radius. Intonation was set using a Korg Rack Tuner.
• Strings: Freshly strung with Ernie Ball Extra Slinkys (.008" - .042").
Note: The plastic rear tremolo cavity cover is missing.
If you want a vintage mojo machine that plays as smoothly as a high-end Fender and is ready for the stage or studio, this is it.
