Description
Self Published. Copyright 1956, 1979 17th Printing. deGarthe, William E. (illustrator). Card cover. Book Condition: Very Good with slight edge wear. No Dustjacket. 40 pages. Illustrated cover.

This book documents Peggy’s Cove as a working coastal community, rather than simply the scenic tourist destination it is known as today. According to a bookseller’s description, its chapters cover the following subjects:
- Origins and settlement: How Peggy’s Cove got its name and the history of the Peggy’s Cove land grant.
- Church and community life: The history of St. John’s Church, St. Paul’s Mission, the community hall, and the local schoolhouse and post office.
- Fishing and the sea: Traditional fishing methods and equipment, including swing nets, lobster traps, eel traps, and spearing flatfish.
- Boats and maritime work: Tancook schooners, whalers, sloop boats, and fishing activities that sustained the community.
- Lighthouses and navigation: The keepers of the local lighthouses and their role in coastal life.
- Landscape and nature: The entrance to the cove, American Pond, the common pitcher plant, and other local features.
- Local landmarks: St. John’s Anglican Church and deGarthe’s own Marine Studio.
This book is interesting because it preserves a picture of mid-20th-century life in a small Nova Scotia fishing village. It records local traditions, maritime occupations, community institutions, and landmarks that help readers understand how Peggy’s Cove developed and how residents lived.
DeGarthe was particularly well suited to tell this story: he lived at Peggy’s Cove and became known for his paintings of Nova Scotia’s rugged coastline and fishing communities
Asking $20.00.
