Description
The item is a double “step back” antique 3-stack quarter-sawn oak barrister bookcase (also known as a lawyer's bookcase). The step back means that each section is deeper than the one above it, causing a “step back” look. (See the pictures for details). This one has two "step backs".

This modular antique barrister bookcase is highly consistent with designs manufactured by the historic makers Globe-Wernicke Co. or The Macey Co (sister companies at that time) dating from the late 1800’s to early 1900s.

Modular Stacking Design: These bookcases were designed as individual, interlocking units that sit on top of a separate base and are capped off with a top crown section.
Retractable Glass Doors: Each section features a glass door outfitted with an individual pull knob. The doors lift upward and slide back horizontally into the unit over the books, keeping them dust-free while allowing complete access. No breaks or cracks in the glass.
Materials: It features quarter-sawn white oak (evident from the tiger-stripe grain on the side panels). This type of wood is highly desirable to collectors compared to the standard flat looking-sawn oak or mahogany-tinted variant. It has antique corner / end metal straps characteristic of antique bookcases from these two manufacturers.
Dimensions: This piece stands at 51 ¾ inches high, 34” wide… the bottom section (outside measurements) is 14” deep and 16 1/2” high, the middle section is 11” deep and 12 1/2” high and the top glass section is 9 1/2” deep and 11 1/2” tall.

The condition and features of this unusual bookcase solidifies its position on the higher end of local market values which is in the $1,500 range when professionally restored, but offered here for sale at $995. It has been professionally cleaned and restored and is a verified antique.

Mechanical: The retractable glass door tracks have been cleaned and waxed so they glide seamlessly over the books without catching or scraping the contents.
Preserved Patina:This was a proper professional restoration that stripped away ground-in grime without removing the historic amber undertone or damaging the highly prized "tiger stripe" flake patterns often found inquarter-sawn oak from this era. The finish has also

been sealed with several coats of clear lacquer.
Glass & Hardware: All three glass panes are scratch- and crack-free, and the side interlocking metal bands are structurally straight with no rust or damage.
